Surgical Technology

Minimally invasive surgery has been proven to provide better cosmetic effect and quicker recovery in patients with CRC. Our department is one of the earliest colorectal institutions to carry out laparoscopic surgery, including laparoscopic colectomy with complete mesocolic excision (CME), laparoscopic total mesorectum excision (TME), natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES), transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), and transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME). The department has been the advanced colorectal center of the laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Zhejiang Province. Nowadays, Fourth-generation da Vinci Surgical Systems (Da Vinci Xi) has been equipped in our hospital to advance minimally invasive surgery across a wide spectrum of surgical procedures. Robotic colorectal surgery is gradually implemented for CRC patients in our department.

Our department dedicates to provide anus preservation operation (sphincter-sparing surgery), pelvic autonomic nerve preservation (PANP), intersphincteric resection (ISR), lateral pelvic lymph node dissection (LPND) and fast track surgery (FTS) for patients with low-middle rectal cancer. Accordingly, the standard surgical procedures have already been established and surgical effects are always satisfactory in our department. More than 90% patients with middle and low rectal cancer has good function of anal sphincter after surgery.

Comprehensive Therapy

Comprehensive therapy includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and other local therapies could be effectively implemented as the strategies for individual treatment in our department. The multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) discussion has been held weekly to improve the prognosis for patients with metastatic and recurrent CRC. The MDT team applied for the experimental units of national CRC-MDT in 2015, and then gained the first prize in the National Colorectal Cancer MDT Competition in 2016.

Colorectal Cancer Rehabilitation

The department united with the Zhejiang Anticancer Association to found a rehabilitation consultant center, which would regularly launch activities for patients with CRC. Besides, the stoma therapy and rehabilitation club, which was established by our specialized nurses, also launch annul activities since the year 1997. Now, more than 1,000 CRC patients with stoma have joined in this club.

Education and Research

Our department has kept a close connection to the famous colorectal institutes in MD Anderson cancer center and National Cancer Center Japan.

●  The department is responsible for education in different level, including undergraduates, postgraduates, visiting physicians, and continuous medicine education courses.

●  The department is a base of the standardized training of surgery residents.

●  The department is a base of Zhejiang specialized nurses training of wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) care.

The department has carried out numerous scientific research projects funded by national and provincial science foundations. More than 100 original articles have published in SCI-indexed and Chinese core journals.

Academic Conference

● National Colorectal Cancer Summit Forum (CCSF)

This meeting begins in 2005, and it is 13th meeting in 2019. NCCSF has become one of the important academic conference in China, and about 1000 professional colorectal surgeons attend this meeting annually.

● National Symposium of Wound, Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Care

This workshop begins in 2013, which is an important national conference for specialized colorectal and WOC nurses. Annually, more than 200 professional nurses participate this conference.

● The surgical technology trainings for laparoscopic colorectal surgery (since 2005)
