Nuclear Medicine

Introduction

Nuclear Medicine Department of Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Science (CHUCAS, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital)was founded in 1972 by Prof. Shanxing Dai and is an important base for clinical practice, research and teaching in nuclear medicine. The department, which already had six nuclide treatment beds opened in 1976, is one of the earliest nuclear medicine departments in Zhejiang Province. Now it has been the center of nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment in Zhejiang and the department’s overall medical and research level is among the best in Zhejiang. It has been authorized as Key Laboratory of Head & Neck Cancer Translational Research of Zhejiang Province(Nuclear medicine center)for many years and the department was titled with Youth Civilization of Zhejiang in 2019.

Staff and Specialists

Nuclear Medicine Department always places great emphasis on building a multilevel team, and focused on the use of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnosis, therapy and research in oncology. Our team has 33 technical staff, including 16 physicians, 10 technicians and 7 nursing staff. Among them, 5 hold senior titles and more than 20 hold junior titles. We strive to be the best nuclear medicine department in China and to serve our hospital with distinction.

Professor Lianfa Li, the director of the department, is also the first president of Zhejiang Nuclear Medicine Doctor Association, the honorary president of nuclear medicine committee of Zhejiang Nuclear Society, a member of Evaluation Experts of National Natural Science Foundation of China, the duty director of the nuclear medicine committee of Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, the director of Zhejiang Nuclear Medicine Diagnosis and Treatment Center and the board member of several journals, including Chinese Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and Journal of Oncology Imaging.

Clinical Work and Features

Nuclear Medicine Department owns one PET/CT Imaging System, two SPECT/CT Imaging Systems with diagnostic level CT, one SPECT, and special wards for internal radiation therapy with 20 beds. About 5000 patients undergo PET/CT examination, about 10000 patients receive SPECT examination, and about 1300 patients undergo Radioactive Iodine-131(131I)Therapy for treating Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma (DTC) each year. It is planned to purchase PET/MR, high-power medical cyclotron and other medical equipment in recent years.

Clinical work can be divided into imaging diagnosis and radionuclide treatment. In terms of imaging diagnosis, the department offers PET/CT tumor imaging, PET/CT myocardial metabolism imaging, nuclear cardiology examination, nuclear medicine diagnosis of nervous system, internal system, skeletal system and digestive system, pulmonary and ventilation imaging, renal dynamic imaging, and mammary gland specific gamma camera imaging, etc. Radionuclide treatment includes 131I treatment of DTC metastases, bone metastasis pain of carcinoma, and other programmes. It is worth mentioning that Nuclear Medicine Department was the first to develop131I tumor cell nuclear human-mouse chimeric monoclonal antibody for the treatment of advanced lung cancer and 131Imetuximab in the treatment of advanced liver cancer in China. It has accumulated rich clinical experience in pain relief treatment of carcinoma and comprehensive treatment of multiple bone metastases based on nuclide.

Teaching and Scientific Research Achievements

The department has made great achievements in studies on nuclear medicine imaging, development of radiopharmaceuticals, radionuclide therapy and other areas. We have carried out several research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and undertaken lots of provincial and ministerial projects. In the past five years, more than 15 SCI and CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index) papers have been published.

Nuclear Medicine Department has been responsible for teaching nuclear medicine major of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University for years and it is about to become crucial component of teaching hospital of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The department also offers clinical training for master programmes of medical imaging and nuclear medicine and is a professional training base for resident physicians. Each year, the department offers training positions for more than 15 resident physicians and provides job rotation training for clinical graduate students from different specialties.

In terms of continuous education, the department welcomes visiting scholars from different hospitals nationwide, and sends one or two doctors or technicians to support the Aksu Central Hospital in Xinjiang. The “Linfa Li Remote workstation” has also been established to contribute to the Aid-the-frontier Project of China. Meantime the department has held the multidisciplinary foreword conference “Qianjiang International Nuclear Oncology Summit (QINO)” for several consecutive years. Many renowned professors from home and abroad have been invited to give lectures on clinical practice and research findings on QINO.
