Interventional radiology (IR) has the distinctive characteristics of the imaging diagnosis andminimally invasive treatment. Because of its advantages of minimally invasion, high efficiency, simplicity, safety and repeatability, it shows broad prospects for development and vigorous vitality. It is one of the most promising subjects in modern medicine, which has changed the pattern of tranditional cancer therapy and became an important part of comprehensive cancer therapy.

Chinese Academy of Sciences

Chief, Department of Interventional radiology

Our department of IR established in the 2001, leaded by Pro. Guoliang Shao who is a well-known expert in the field of interventional radiology in china, also he is the leader of the discipline of interventional  radiology in Zhejiang province and devote himself to the development of this subject. There are 12 doctors, 4 technicians and 22 nurses. The department has own interventional specialist ward (45 beds), outpatient clinic and training base. There are three operating rooms equipped with advance equipments (include two DSA, one CT ,one color Doppler ultrasound, two radiofrequency ablation systems ,one microwave ablation apparatus, one radiation therapy planning system, and one CT electric-magnetic navigation system.) About 5000 patients received interventional procedures each year. Especially, there were lots of cases of liver cancer received C-TACE, D-TACE and Microwave/ radiofrequency ablation therapy. Also many cases of lung cancer and metastases from digestive system received implantation of radioactive seeds .

Major areas of treatment / Clinics

We focuse on interventional therapy of  liver malignancy  (primary or secondary) , lung cancer ,cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic carcinoma, et .The main interventional therapies include:

1  Intra-arterial chemotherapy ,chemoembolization

2  Microwave/ radiofrequency ablation,

3  Implantation of radioactive seeds

4  Placement of metal stent , superior/inferior vena cava filter,

5 Embolization of digestive tract ulcer hemorrhage, post-operation bleeding and tumor bleeding.

6 Removal of vascular foreign body (iatrogenic catheter, guide wire, etc.):

7  Infusion port implantation

8  Intravascular thrombolysis

9  TIPS for Treatment of portal hypertension bleeding

10  Intubation of small intestine

11 Puncture biopsy for space-occupying lesions in various parts of the body(such as lung cancer)

12  Puncture drainage of various cyst or abscesses

13  Bone cementoplasty

14  Nerve blocks for cancerous pain

Research fieid:

1 Research of clinical effect and Mechanism of immunotherapy combined with TACE for HCC

2 Liver cancer risk factor model was devised in patients with chronic liver diseases

3 Study on Dosage of radioactive seeds in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and it clinical efficacy.

4 Design and development of New multi-modality imaging  drug-loaded nano-microsphere

5 Developing new interventional therapy  devices and creating  new  technique.

We are dedicated to improve people's  health and enhance the quality of life for patients through the provision of the state-of-the-art medical care, clinical research and education.
