The 13th International Gastric Cancer Westlake Summit, A Smashing Success

On October 23 to 25, 2020 the 13th International Gastric Cancer Westlake Summit was held in the beautiful Hangzhou, which was sponsored by Zhejiang Anti-cancer Association, Zhejiang Mathematical Medical Association, Zhejiang Provincial Technology Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Upper Gastrointestinal Tumor, organized by the Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital), and co-organized by Chinese Journal Of Gastrointestinal Surgery, China Cancer, Journal of Chinese Oncology.

The content of this summit was brilliant, with a total of one main venue and sixteen sessions, including session of “Surgery”, “Internal medicine”, “Synthesis”, “Molecular pathological progress”, “Basic research”, “Nursing”, “Live surgery”, “Young and Middle-aged forum”, “Clinical research forum”, “GIST explorers”, “CSCO guide tour”, “Standardized diagnosis and treatment tour”, “Standardized diagnosis and treatment of ovarian metastasis”.

The summit lasted three days by the forms of online and offline model that attracted more than 175,000 participants. Many well-known experts at home and abroad gave special lectures to exchanged and discuss the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer in order to promote development. Professor Cheng Xiangdong, Secretary of the Party Committee of The Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Zhejiang Cancer Hospital), and Professor Wu Yang, the vice chairman and secretary general of Zhejiang Anti-Cancer Association, gave opening address in the beginning.

     
           

The main venue of the summit conducted a heated discussion on hot topics such as the progress of immunotherapy and gastroesophageal tumor treatment, the advantages and disadvantages of precision surgical treatment of gastric cancer, single-center complete laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery, the transformation of early gastric cancer surgical treatment concepts and future trends, the exploration of gastrointestinal cancer transformation research, epidemiological research progress, gastrointestinal reconstruction strategies after laparoscopic radical gastric cancer, information data structuring and the role of AI in real world gastric cancer research. The summit focused on the future development of gastric cancer in order to effectively promote the progress of research in various fields of gastric cancer.

               

In the surgical session, Professor Ji Jiafu performed total radical gastrectomy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and Professor Cheng Xiangdong performed total laparoscopic radical resection of distal gastric cancer. They performed the operation skillfully and dexterously. After live surgeries, a number of experts successively gave speeches of “Preliminary experience of the clinical research on the perioperative treatment of gastric cancer”, “The hot issues of gastric cancer function preserving surgery, the construction of smart hospitals”, “The basic principles that are easy to be ignored in gastric cancer surgery”, and “The progress of diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer peritoneal metastasis”.

The internal medicine session focused on the current status and frontier of gastric cancer immunotherapy progress. The speeches of “The status and challenges of gastric cancer immunotherapy”, “The importance of tumor nutrition support in the immune era”, “The 2020 ESMO gastric cancer treatment progress”, “HER2 positive gastric cancer treatment progress”, “PD-L1 expression and gastric cancer immunotherapy”, “EB positive gastric cancer treatment progress”, “dMMR/MSI-H gastric cancer treatment progress”, “Perioperative immunotherapy exploration”, “New needs for pathological detection in the immunotherapy era”, “Introduction of adverse reactions of immune combined chemotherapy and irAE management”, “Pay attention to HER2 detection-the whole process” were held successfully.

In the comprehensive session, experts focused on the research progress of “Preoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy for gastric cancer”, “The progress of postoperative radiotherapy for gastric cancer”, “The application of hyperthermic perfusion chemotherapy in the treatment of advanced gastric cancer”, “The clinical research on the prevention of gastric cancer peritoneal metastasis by intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion”, “The full management of nutritional therapy for advanced gastric cancer”, and “Perioperative nutritional therapy for gastric cancer”.

The session of progress of molecular pathology of gastrointestinal tumors shared reports of “The precise diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer based on NGS technology”, “The research of gastric cancer genomics and molecular typing”, “The research progress of gastric cancer pathological diagnosis assisted by artificial intelligence”, “The heterogeneity of expression of HER2 in gastric canceranalysis and clinical significance”, “Molecular pathology research progress of colorectal cancer”, “Molecular characteristics and heterogeneity of dMMR/MSI-H colorectal cancer”, “Different parts and different morphological characteristics of lymphoepithelioma like carcinoma (LELC) genomics”, “The importance of quality control in molecular pathology diagnosis”.

Speakers in the basic research session brought a number of wonderful reports, including “Multiple recombinant analysis of new antigens and immune microenvironment in precision immunotherapy for colon cancer”, “Screening and prevention of gastric cancer in high risk populations in our country”, “The molecular epidemiology of malignant tumors in the Chinese population”, “The promotion of artificial intelligence in the transformation of basic research results to clinical”, “The histogenesis mechanism of the JC virus T antigen on gastric cancer”, “The possibility of autophagy in the precise treatment of tumors”, “Research progress of esophagus-gastric junction adenocarcinoma”.

The content of the nursing session include “Continuous management practice of cancer patients under the concept of accelerated recovery”, “Predictive evaluation of critically ill patients in surgery”, “Evidence-based continuous quality improvement case sharing”, “Multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment mode of cancer surgery specialized care management and practice”, “Application of minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer”, and “Full-process management of gastric cancer during perioperative period”.

The inauguration meeting of the Gastric Tumor Professional Committee of Zhejiang Anticancer Association was held. The meeting invited Professor Zhu Guanbao, Professor Hu Ping, Professor Xu Hongbao, and Professor Jin Huicheng as advisory members, and Professor Cheng Xiangdong was elected as the chairman, and Professor Wu Dan, Professor Wang Xianfa, Professor Shen Xian, Professor Chen Ping, Professor Tao Feng, and Professor Ying Jie'er were the vice-chairmen.

2020 Gastrointestinal Cancer Early Diagnosis and Treatment Project Training Course and Common Growth Plan-China Star of Mirror (Zhejiang Station) venue was held successfully.

The session of Leader of the stomach-The young forum of the gastric cancer focuses on subjects of “The management of full laparoscopic gastric complications”, Surgeons in the era of new media”, “Introduction of full laparoscopic anastomosis and endoscopic-assisted anastomosis”, “Discussion of the reconstruction methods of the proximal stomach”, “Robotic radical gastric cancer surgery and perforation”.

The session of the gastric cancer clinical research focuses on subjects of clinical research design, experience sharing of clinical research development, opportunities for gastric cancer clinical research in the immune era, and the responsibilities of researchers in clinical research. The researches have been shared, displayed, and interpreted, and the content is closely integrated with the clinical practice of gastric cancer.

The experts in session of GIST Explorers gave detailed speeches and discussions on the updated pathology, surgery, and drugs chapters of the guide. Several experts gave lectures with theoretical updates and clinical case practices, and gave specific new drugs detailed data presentation and advantage analysis, designed to bring more benefits to more patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

The session of CSCO Gastric Cancer Guide Tour-The Zhejiang station focused on research of “The interpretation of metastatic gastric cancer drug treatment”, “Interpretation of comprehensive treatment of single distant metastatic gastric cancer”, “Interpretation of pathology and molecular testing”, “Gastric cancer follow-up, screening and genetic management”, and “Interpretation of comprehensive treatment of non-metastatic gastric cancer”, “Explore the specific differences between the old and new guideline’s”, “The detailed rules of diagnosis and treatment plan adjustment”, and “The situation of new developments and new drugs”.

The session of Zhejiang gastric cancer standardized treatment tour focused on subjects of “the treatment methods and latest developments of gastroesophageal junction tumors”, “the surgical treatment of the gastroesophageal junction from the perspective of a thoracic surgeon”, “interpretation of proximal gastrectomy and digestive tract reconstruction by Chinese experts”, “exploration of surgical anastomosis methods for gastroesophageal junction tumors”, “exploration of digestive tract reconstruction methods after proximal gastrectomy for early esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma”, “exploration of full-laparoscopic esophageal jejunum/gastric anastomotic fistula treatment-MDT collaborative processing”.

In the session of Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastric Cancer Ovarian Metastasis, experts discussed the epidemiology, imaging characteristics, possible metastasis pathways, specific mechanisms, and corresponding medical treatment strategies of gastric cancer ovarian metastasis, and provided rich opinions and suggestions for formulating a standardized diagnosis and treatment plan for gastric cancer ovarian metastasis in China.
